Every winter Bahraini families pitch tents in the Sakhir desert under a season, map and rules set each year by the Southern Governorate.

Winter camping in the Sakhir desert is one of Bahrain's oldest seasonal habits. When the heat breaks, families and groups of friends set up tents, majlis seating and barbecues on approved plots in the south of the island and return to them on evenings and weekends through the cooler months.

The Southern Governorate runs the season. Each year it announces the dates, publishes an approved camping map and sets rules on safety, waste and site spacing. Plots are allocated through the Khayyam service in the governorate's Aljunobya app, with a short registration window before the season opens. Thousands of plots are usually allocated, and the governorate coordinates with police, civil defence and municipal teams.

Dates change from year to year. The 2024 to 2025 season ran from 20 November to 20 February, and the 2025 to 2026 season was set for 5 December 2025 to 25 March 2026. On 2 March 2026 the governorate suspended that season until further notice for public safety reasons linked to the regional situation, and campers were told to remove tents.

As of late October 2026 no dates for the 2026 to 2027 season had been published. Watch the Southern Governorate's official channels and the Aljunobya app for the announcement. If you do not want to camp yourself, tour operators run evening desert trips, and the season's atmosphere can be seen on drives around Sakhir.
