Sakhir Palace

قصر الصخير

Al Sakhir Palace is a historic royal palace in the Sakhir desert, used for state occasions and closed to the public.

About Sakhir Palace

Al Sakhir Palace stands in the desert of western Bahrain, north east of Zallaq and Bahrain International Circuit. Sources differ on when it was built, giving dates between 1870 and 1901. It is a white palace in traditional Islamic style, with arches, columns, a dome and a tall minaret.

Shaikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Ruler of Bahrain, moved to the palace around 1925 and lived there until his death in 1942. It was then left closed for many years as a mark of respect, before being restored in the mid 1990s and returning to official use.

Today the palace is a setting for state events. It has hosted visiting heads of state, including a 2008 visit by the US President, and on 16 May 2024 it was the main venue for the 33rd Arab League Summit, the first Arab summit hosted by Bahrain.

The palace is not open to visitors, and there is no tour or viewing area. Drivers pass near it on the Sakhir road network and tour guides sometimes point it out. Photography near official and security sites can be restricted, so do not stop on the roadside or photograph checkpoints.
