Bahrain's national public university, founded in 1986, with its main campus in Sakhir housing most of its colleges.

The University of Bahrain was established in 1986 by Amiri decree, merging the Gulf Polytechnic and the University College of Arts, Science and Education. It is the largest public university in the country and admits thousands of new students every year.

The main campus is in Sakhir, in the south of the island, not far from Bahrain International Circuit. It houses most colleges, including Arts, Business Administration, Law, Information Technology, Science, Applied Studies and Physical Education, along with Bahrain Teachers College.

Other colleges are on smaller campuses: Engineering in Isa Town, next to Bahrain Polytechnic, and Health Sciences in Salmaniya near the Salmaniya Medical Complex. This split means some students travel between campuses depending on their programme. The arrangement lets the engineering and health colleges sit close to industry and hospital partners.

The Sakhir campus has a central library, an English Language Centre, sports facilities including a swimming pool, and language institutes such as a Confucius Institute and a King Sejong Institute. It is a major employer and draws daily traffic to the Sakhir area.
